Talking about comparative performances here. If AVB has gained more points but failed to reach the top four then it's harsh to say he has failed.

Yes, league position matters in the sense that you need to finish 17th and above to survive, you need to finish top 4 for champion's league, etc, but this is an exercise to show how some teams have improved and others have drastically declined despite the current league table not showing that.
