My only criticism of White Bear would be
that I actually got a little weary of all her blubbing. But hey, that's horror. However I can't recall a better example of 'playing with our emotions' in anything I've ever watched. She was basically Myra Hindley all along and yet even at the end our sympathies lay more readily with her than with the ghouls who feasted on her purgatory.
Yes, you are absolutely right about the replicant and that is why it falls down a little in comparison to The Entire History Of You, which managed to say huge things about the destructive paranoia in relationships with the introduction of a technological advance that never seemed that far fetched.
But if you take the replicant to be just a dramatic/narrative device - more symbolism than science - then it works well enough. Her friend was right - it did help her get over her loss; by reminding her that he had most definitely gone, that he wasn't coming back and that her fond memories of the relationship would sustain her in the absence of his physical presence.
The replicant turned out to be a poor replacement, hence he ended up in the loft... with the other things we no longer have a need for.
