It's just English culture innit.
From a very young age, the biggest strongest players are picked first over the smaller kids with more talent and skill.
If you can t**t the ball hard and far, then you're in the school team. If you can kick someone hard then you'll play centre back.
We are never taught to pass the ball, it's all about winning matches. On the continent they don't play competitive games for ages, they just teach the art of football.
Also like Brandonio said the other day, England won the World Cup playing 4-4-2 and Chelsea won the European Cup playing dogged determined football. This makes people assume English style is the way to go.
It's just the way we are. A sliding tackle gets a bigger cheer than a great through ball. We're f**ked and there's no changing it.
