Definition of "serious foul play" is on p11

No mention of "intent" which some people were referring to last night - simply the use of "excessive force" in challenging for the ball is enough, as is endangering the safety of an opponent

Can easily see how a ref could consider that challenge as ise of "excessive force", or "endangering the safety of an opponent", or indeed both
