The thing is that most (all?) modern CPUs have an automatic shut off
when a certain temperature is reached. I guess it's possible that they can go wrong, but even if you were to boot up without the heatsink and fan it should switch off automatically. Also, any problems with cooling would typically be preceded by the PC shutting down suddenly.
When you had yours, did you just replace the CPU and nothing else to fix it?
