Foo thoughts on yesterday
A really, really crap day. The only positive to take from it is that despite our terrible run we still remain 7 points from the bottom three and once we have the spurs game out of the way have some (theoretically) more winnable fixtures coming up. That said some major concerns are:
1. For me that performance must surely be unhelpful in terms of our pursuit of Hooper. It's clear that any transfer is going to depend in part upon him forcing the issue and asking to move. Would you go out on a limb to force a move to us at present if you were in his situation?
2. The way the defence falls apart without Bassong is pathetic. I dread to think what the stats are but we must average about 4 goals against without him in the team and I'm struggling to think if any points we've gained. We do not have a good enough back up CB.
3. Confidence seems at rock bottom both amongst fans and players. I can't recall a game for a long time where beforehand so many of us were so convinced we'd get battered and that's a real worry because our club has been free of that sort of fearful attitude for quite a long time now. In part, Hughton has to take some blame for this because his negative tactics are contributing to it and looking at some of the players I am really not sure they are that happy with how we are setting out to play in these games. Holt in particular looks moody and frustrated. It's not nice to watch so must at times be hard to play that style of play as well.
4. Where we go from here I am not sure. It's clear we can't keep the ball well enough without Wes but we also can't seem to play Wes and 2 strikers. With the current squad maybe time to try Fox? If we can get Hooper or Graham then maybe rather than buy both we need to spend the rest of the cash on a ball playing midfielder.
Deep down I know we will probably be ok but at present I can't help but feel we are on a serious downward spiral. Really need an Arsenal style win to snap us out of this!
