is the fact that Orwell distinguished between the way in which the proles would be controlled and the way in which party members would be controlled

He found the latter much more interesting and that is therefore the centre of 1984, but he foresaw exactly how the masses would be controlled through distraction - alcohol, pornography, lottery, mindless entertainment. Prolefeed.
