sounds like a "blockage" to me suggs
here's how to avoid those costly plumber call-outs:
1. get a stick of dynamite, shove it down the drain, run some electric cord from the blasting cap to a central location down the garden. pack some frozen peas around the dynamite to create a "shaped charge" which will focus the energy of the blast towards the blockage.
***HEALTH & SAFETY ADVISORY***
get your sofa down the garden and squat behind it. for added safety wear a colander on your head, hold in place with masking tape.
2. connect up the wires up to an "ACME" T-handle detonator
3. shout out a warning to your pets... "FIRE IN THE HOLE!" should suffice
4. depress plunger
5. give it 20 seconds until everything airborne has descended safely.
6. survey your handywork with the warm glow of pride of a job well done.
7. replace sofa.
8. return to doing the dishes.
