Good points both of you.
But as it grates I'm sticking to my guns. Football reserves the right to be different and so normal grammar rules don't apply.
In terms of referring to teams it also grates with me when we use the Americanised(?) 'Team Britain' rather than just 'Britain' or 'the British team'.
