If you're on a pay monthy mobile contract, can you keep the same number

if you switch to pay as you go with a different provider?

If so, how much of a nightmare is the whole process? Orange have f**ked me right off this weekend, been with them nearly ten years and currently pay about 100 quid a month across four devices. Did a massive rant in the shop yesterday and nearly made a man cry.
