He really looked like he had grown into his role at the end of last season

The first half of the season there were signs but he looked very short of confidence. In that poor run in we had he started to show a bit more determination, that culminated in his performance at WHL which would have been great even without the goal.

Russell Martin seems to have been restricted as an attacking force (or he can't do it without completely neglecting his defensive responsibilities) so we essentially have no width down the right flank. If Whittaker was available then that might not be a problem, but as we stand right now it's preventing the team from creating goals.
