Why do you definitely want gears?

I do a 5 mile commute or so each in London (from Stokey, not Clapton....) and I use 2 gears doing that. Sometimes only one.

Quite a lot of hassle comes with maintaining all the gears that are never used on the commute - if I only used the bike for my commute, then I think I'd definitely go for a single speed. (Nothing to do with posing - they're just really practical. And you get a *lot* more for your money.)

Of course, you may want to use the bike for other stuff, in which case fair enough. Go for gears.
