To be fair he just made a journalistic judgment call
He had evidence from what looked like a credible source
He decided he was going to believe it
And then being a tabloid editor he decided to sensationalise it
I think far too much is being made of the Sun's coverage - they believed the police account and sexed it up. The real and utter, utter DISGRACE is the lying by the cops in the first place. People trust the police on the whole, hence all the people who still feel somehow that the fans are to blame - that's what the police said for years.
