international standards organisation coding should be the protocol
different organisations sometimes make it up as they go along though e.g. olympics committee and the media
the ISO coding ensures that each country has a unique abbreviated form and settles potential disputes between similarly monikered nations such as slovakia and slovenia (SI and SK)
it's similarly annoying when sky abbreviate the first three letters of some teams and then go random for others. i cannot think of an example though.
