he was checking in and put his bag down on top of his record box. Within 30 seconds it had gone. ?4k, passport and keys to his porsche that was waiting for him at the airport in Italy.

I guess, basically, just don't let your guard drop and be sensible. If you go to La Ramblas stick to the main stretch, avoid sidestreets etc.
