Lambert was desperate to leave I think because:

He wants to get to the top. Next season he either kepts us up again (which would have kept him roughly in the same position as he was in at the end of this season, where a team like Villa may have wanted him him), or we got relegated, in which case he loses any chance of a bigger club.

He had very little to gain by staying, I think.
