Is it better for a manager to be sacked, resign or go by 'mutual consent'?

In terms of getting future employment?

Wouldn't have thought that managers would want to have the 'honour' of being sacked on their C.V., can't look too good when applying for new jobs.

I'd guess the best is resigning due to not being able to get on with the board (i.e. Martin O'Neill), but surely the one that would suit us and Worthington at the moment would be mutual consent?

If that's the case, I reckon we'd get away with a deal like you said - not having to pay him off in full, although it'd still be costly.
