Russell Martin was playing right back that day

but has proven himself adequate at CB.

Whitbread was playing that day and got injured.

De Laet was soon out of the team.

Tierney was very good that day.

That was the first day of the season with an experimental defence and no Naughton.

Yes I agree that we have general problems in defence, Ward and Barnett aren't up to it, Whitbread (bye bye) is adequate but injury prone, Tierney and Drury the same as Zak, Ayala and Bennett are long term prospects but not the finished article, Russell Martin is a band aid at CB.
