But you don't need to befriend anyone, so your daughter needn't know.

Then set the settings so it's fairly private, and uncheck the options to email you if anything happens. However, once you start exploring it gets a bit addictive and you start looking for people you know and it snowballs. It's really only an updated friends reunited crossed with CompuServe to my mind.
