I used to, but not for a long time now

I was chatting to another old fart at work about this. My mental arithmetic used to be spot-on, and I could work out puzzles to a personally acceptable standard. Not any more. He said the same: he used to be able to calculate optimum temperatures for the separation of metals in his head. Not any more.

I told him I have a theory as to why we've both slipped, and it's nothing to do with a gradual failing of mental capacity: it's because as one grows older, one realises that nobody is going to shag you for being clever. And with that conclusion, one takes the easier option, and grabs a calculator.
