One way I like to 'trigger' pc's to work, is by having a current

linux os cd

Cos if you let the setup run on them, but then cancel the installation, nothing changes on your pc, and you can boot up windows normally afterwards

If you got one of those (either make one, or buy one for a ?1 on ebay), you can see if the pc is going to react to anything new at all
