Hmmm. Well...Nobody NEEDS and iPad, and you don't NEED an iPod, because

you can use your Smartphone as the iPod, and there isn't much you can't do with your laptop that you can do with an iPad (exception being GPS-assisted stuff).

While they do often refer to putting music libraries on the iPad I wouldn't use that as my device of choice for music as it is too big.

It is really all about how you would use the iPad. For me it is perfect for home. But I don't use it for work. It is even more perfect for when I go on holiday. For example I sat in my mum's living room watching a movie on my iPad which was being streamed from the iMac in my house in Holland. And e-books and stuff. If you travel a lot it is great.

I'd say go down to the Apple store and just have a play to get the idea of how you might or might not use it.
