Don't anyone get me wrong on this, I'm not suggesting that either player is/was a donkey, or carthorse, or whatever: both have/had their talents. What I'm trying to get across is that determination seems to be their finest quality, and I find that, what's the word? 'Laudable' doesn't quite get there.......
