This is such a minefield

Striking a balance between getting the right level of legislation that protects workers and giving employers the freedom to manage their workforce effectively is almost an impossible dream. i work in a relatively large organisation's HR department and we manage, but that's only because we have the manpower to ensure that we do everything by the book. However, in a SME with little or no HR function, it must be a nightmare. But this isn't the answer; abolishing unfair dismissal would just return the ability to 'coast along' to the employer. And it shows ridiculously little awareness of sickness absence trends to lay this at the door of perceived laziness - stress-related absenteeism and presenteeism is a massive problem but a lot of people just don't get it.
