Yeah but as a company I couldn't take that risk. The costs in customer data being lost are

huge in terms of fines, customers who will leave because of it, and market reputation.

Customer billing data especially is an absolute no-no to lose so you take no risks.

But yeah I wouldn't bother going as far as crushing the disk for just a home PC ! Might take a hammer to it though.

Incidentally for supplying about 30 secure "bins" for thousands of hard disks (lockable, and then only unlockable by the security company), then collecting them all full of hard disks from three different datacenters in 2 cities and crushing them, they only charged me about 2.5k euros. I almost fell over when I got the quote.
