What current medical thinking is that ?

Certainly not the thinking of our team physio (who teaches sports physiotherapy at uni) or our team doctor (Mrs. In Holland).

I have also spent an entire day on a course aimed specifically at concussion and head injuries (common in my sport).

Concussion is a brain injury. It could also be accompanied by small haemorrhages which can get worse over a period of a week or so. They can be missed on first inspection which is why, if you have a suspected concussion, you should wake yourself up every x minutes per evening depending on severity in order to avoid coma.

Aside from all that, any loss of orientation, however minor, can result in making mistakes which can lead to other injuries - especially when performing at professional level!
