If you are there for some fun, bet small on the bigger odds. Less money to lose and higher wins. If you fancy winning a bit, keep an eye on the exchange for prices coming in as more are backing it and might be worth a sniff.

Take an amount you are willing to lose, dont bet any more than that - even if you win on a race
