Another fillum recommendation for you: "Animal Kingdom"
It's a cracker, this. An Aussie film, set in Melbourne, its main character is a barely articulate teenager whose Mother dies of an overdose in Scene 1 and who moves in with his Gran. Sadly, his uncles are Melbourne's nastiest gang of crims, all under police surveillance. The eldest uncle is a psychopath, but not a Hollywood psycho: there's no show or showboating, he's just a thoroughly horrible bastard and it's a credit to the actor that as the movie went on I found myself beginning to hate him.
I shan't say what happens, but I will say what doesn't. In a Hollywood movie, young J would have found currge, become a hero and confronted his demons. But he doesn't: he remains inarticulate and naive and his decisions are flawed and easily swayed.
A shade under two hours, I was engrossed throughout. I'd been racking my brains all day to recall what other recent fillum it reminded me of, and I finally got it. It's a bit like last year's Britflick Down Terrace but imho it's on another level altogether, better in terms of style, pacing and performance. It's reallyreally good, enjoy.
