yes, it is a long running joke about women not knowing the offside rule

it's not a joke to show disgust that a women should ever be chosen to run the line at a Premier League match, there was no joking in their voices - that's what marked that out as not being a joke or a bit of banter.

even so, it's by allowing jokes like that that help perpetuate the myth, that help people justify their beliefs, that women have no place referreeing in the man's game.

you're quite right though, the clip where Gray asks Charlotte Whatsername to tuck a mic pack into his trousers is far worse and is worthy of a the far harsher punishment Gray has received, being as it's basically sexual harrassment.
