No, it didn't come from a book, I'm a very good friend of MON and he told me over a few beers during the World Cup in France back in 1998!

I do tend to give a grain of credibility to a quote, of course, they could be lying, but then you may as well dis-believe everything anyone says about anyone. He said that the reason he left was due to the fact that his family weren't relocating, he was missing them & finding working, alone, in Norwich difficult. Rightly or wrongly, and yes, it may not be the truth, and yes, the timing was, as you so sharply observe, pretty acute as well. If he is lying, then why did he leave? Was it solely and 100% a strop over not getting his own way over new players-don't think so, he was thwarted, financially, at Wycombe, Leicester and Celtic over players he wanted to sign, especially at Celtic where his plans for the club in no way, as far as the calibre of players are concerned, matched the spending power of the club and restructions of Dermot Desmond. But he didn't walk out on them, he made do with what he eventually got. Everyone knew that Chase wasn't going to last forever at Norwich and a stubborn and tough man like O'Neill could have faced him down easily, had he wanted to, but he wasn't happy personally and that was that.

So maybe I do believe "that old chestnut"-but its the best there is and the most credible! To say a man like MON would walk out on a club simply because he couldn't cope with a chairman, one man, an unpopular man whilst O'Neill was seen as a messiah, a chairman who would be hounded out of the club, everyone know that, is an insult to O'Neill.
