Health and Safety, or to give it its proper name, Claims Avoidance, is

taking over all of our lives.

Eye protection became compulsory at our place about a year ago, despite the number of eye injuries suffered being nil in 7 years. But fair enough, I suppose there is a risk.

As of Monday, ear protection has also become compulsory. Not the firm's idea: it's a directive that's come from Noise At Work. I pointed out that while I appreciate that if someone's on a noisy machine all day, he may need earmuffs, and that's fine: but my job entails a lot of walking about, and therefore ear protection is likely to make me less safe, as I may not hear the forklift coming up behind me.

Good point, Alan, but tough s**t. Got to wear them.

I swear we'll all be dressed like Dart Vader before we're much older. Not at work: in the bloody pub.
