The way I look at it is that this publication is similar to, say. the pinkun.
That's aimed Norwich fans. Therefore it would run a story on an Ex Norwich player, like Carl Robinson, going to play in Canada, and would state 'ex Canary' in the article.

Its simply done to identify why the story is relevant to the select target audience they* intend their articles to appeal to.

There's no need to see it as an attempt to seperate that section of society from the rest, in the same way that is not what the Pinkun does.

*They refers to the publication in this case.
