I play up front, and when I was younger
I used to make a lot of runs into the box.
I would run in and if I was ahead of the defender would continue my run to the edge of the six yard box and beyond.
If I was neck and neck with the defender or just behind I woudl abruptly stop and drop back a yard or two towards the penatly spot,. The defender would continue the run and I'd be free.
It's up to the winger to take a quick look and see what's going on in the box.
