Any Mac / iTunes users answer a question for me?

Recently playing music via iTunes has been a weird experience. It sounds as if I'm playing it on a stretched cassette, for those of you old enough to remember that phenomenon. It's an odd kind of distortion. The hard drive is nearly full, so I'm wondering if that's the problem. I'm pretty certain it's not the speakers (Soundsticks mk 1 through USB), but I suppose that is a possibility - they're a few years old now.

Any ideas anyone?

I'm off to watch TV for a bit.
