Crucial Time

Today was a just awful way to relinquish our Premiership status but I refuse to dwell on that. The next few months will be crucial to the short and long term future of this club.

First of all Worthington has got to seek an early meeting with the Board to find out exactly how much money he has got to spend in the transfer market this summer. I wil be disappointed if it is less than ?3m as it is complacent to assume that this squad is strong enough to mount a decent challenge in the Championship next season. We will need at least four decent signings to give us the depth that has been lacking this season.

Because of the transfer window rules applying to the Championship next season, Worthy cannot afford to have another summer sitting on his hands while he dithers over who to sign. He will need all his targets in place before pre-season starts in July.

Finally, and possibly most contentiously, the Board must not be lured into offering Worthy a new contract until he has proved himself next season. If he has not got us in the top six by Nov/Dec, then it may be time for a change. We do not want to have to pay up his contract when that money could be going into the transfer kitty of the new manager.

I sincerely hope it will not come to that but the examples of Wolves, West Ham etc show we have to keep things in perspective.

Can't wait for August to get here.
