I think the phrase 'tighten the purse strings'...
... sounds a little misleading.
I mean, I can't imagine that the board would have several million quid just hanging around but refuse to spend it on players. And if that's the case then what are they supposed to do? Borrow it?
Don't forget when we signed Ashton we never expected to have that kind of money available, and it has been called a 'calculated gamble' by Doncaster and others. This makes me think we were stretching the budget in January, in the hope that we'd stay up. Now we haven't, it's going to have an effect on how much money there is now.
At the end of the day if the money's not there it's not there. Although I'd be grateful if anyone sees any of the board members swanning round in a new Ferrari....
Anyway, if you want to see where the money's going, then look at the accounts next year, should tell the full story.
