I heard that a famous guitarist whose name escapes me would dab superglue onto his fingertips, glue them to his opposite arm, then pull them off, rather painfully I would have thought, resulting in nice hard pads on the fingertips.

Wouldn't advise that myself.

Other things you could do are to lower the action of your guitar (that means adjust the neck and the bridge so that the strings sit closer to the frets) or use lower gauge (ie thinner) strings.

Or just play through it 'til your hands toughen up - that's my advise.
