Now, if you want a novel about a fictional football club, please may I recommend

"The Kilburn Social Club" by Robert Hudson, published this year. He happens to be David Mitchell off of the TV's flat mate. Or did. Or suffen. Anyhoo that hasn't got anything to to with anything.

It's actually a decent read. Possibly tending towards the pretentious at times (the third-person perspective narrations of a particular African character had me thinking "steady on son, this is only your debut novel you know, probably best to leave that sort of clever s**t to the pros, you're not quite up to it yet") but for the vast majority of the book I found it very enjoyable.
