i reckon it's loads of programmes running in the background
try going to start?run? and type 'msconfig' and see what files you have set to come on at startup. Untick everything thats not essential.
this link might explain things a bit better. (but don't worry cos all this stuff is 100% reversible if you find it makes your computer worse)
