Never sure quite what this is meant to be rewarding. But purely in terms of sporting achievement, I think I'd vote for Cavendish (altho Bradley Wiggins ought to be on the shortlist, too).

Some sort of honourable mention for Giggs, too. Maybe a new category of 'old sportsman of the year".
