Here you go, to the best of my ability...

1. The Strokes - garage New York punk, ie. Television.

2. The Libertines - UK punk-pop, ie. Squeeze.

3. Primal Scream - pretentious electro-punk nonsense, ie. The Stone Roses.

4. Arctic Monkeys - literate punk-pop, with Sheffield accents. Fine lyrics.

5. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - alternative and ambitious scuzzy shoegaze art-punk. My favourite band of all time.

6. PJ Harvey - consistently good but versatile indie singer-songwriter, in a similar vein to Patti Smith.

7. Arcade Fire - Arty, jangly epic folk.

8. Interpol - Joy Division without Ian Curtis, like New Order. Only cool with better lyrics. Pants likes them.

9. The Streets - Literate storytelling songwriter Mike Skinner but over an RnB/urban backdrop - part Billy Bragg, part Ian Dury and the Blockheads. Sort of. Very good in the early days, not so good lately.

10. Radiohead - Avante-garde indie.
