Its the former definitely but a bit of the latter as well

There are a lot of people in this country who think there has been far too much immigration in recent years and want it to stop now. There are also a great number who are deeply concerned at how our sovereignty has been surrendered to Europe.

Labour has singularly failed to address immigration. The tories are too terrified to say anything after last time when Blair's spin machine managed to paint them all as racist for even mentioning it.

If you therefore are part of this body of people there are arguably 2 parties (maybe more but i don't know enough of minor fringe parties) with whom you can register your vote which sends a clear message to the mainstream parties. One is UKIP and the other is the BNP. If all the dissenters voted green it would not send the same message.

I don't think many people who voted BNP in the European elections would do so in a general election (at the moment I think people mistakenly think the european elections have very little significance anyway). It is therefore a protest vote but it is a protest vote founded on frustration over the failure of the mainstream parties to address particular issues which the BNP are prepared to take up - the main one of which is immigration.
