He may go for insanity judging by the "can't remember" line. It looks as though he's thrown self-defence out of the window by admitting that he went beyond self-defence

I do no criminal law so I'm not much better placed than you are, but I expect it to be rather hard work to admit that you took on your wife in a knife fight, went beyond self-defence, killed her and yet its only manslaughter
