it's basically hardware

you have a router (like a powerful modem) that sends out a signal, and you have a PC that has wifi capabilities (built in or maybe a thumb drive). Then you basically 'broadcast' your standard internet connection throughout your house.

But now (maybe not much in the uk) there are companies that broadcast a wifi signal that you have to pay to use. Like in an airport for example.

There's a new standard being developed where every 'node' of the network can then rebroadcast the internetness (a bit like peer to peer), which whoul dmake things more democratic. And then there's wimax, which is like wifi but so powerful that it will allow you to connect to your computer at home when you're at work.
