It's surely more of a time saver for the passenger than a security measure
The theory being if you have a concealed weapon or something you're not supposed to, it will be found under the current security regime. You just have to stand in a que for an hour before they find it.
Now you can walk straight through the scann-a-magig and it does it instantly. If you don't want people to see your knackers you have to queue with the other fat people with small nobs and it'll take fecking ages.
