instead of an ISO standard like MP3? iTunes will play pretty much every format except WMA (although the Windows version will, I believe, convert them for you, although there might be quality loss as with any transcoding). I think you can even find plug-ins for FLAC and Ogg Vorbis (don't quote me on that)

The problem most people have with iTunes is the way it stores and names the files; but if you're not sharing them (that would be naughty of course) then I don't think it matters. I like the way it presents the music to me and easy to navigate to what you want to heard. It's a doddle to rip a CD.
