I don't think it's quite that unpleasant; but it does sound odd for sure

The glottal stop is everywhere in the damn language - even the simplest word for one ("en") has a glottal stop in it! Nothing is ever quite pronounced how it seems (unlike German where it's relatively consistent). I read somewhere that it's reckoned to be the fourth hardest language to learn.
