Think of it more as an all round test of different strengths.

Some are good sprinters - Cavendish/Hushvold. Win stages and go for the green jersey.

Good climbers go for the polka dot jersey, you pretty much have to be able to climb well to win the tour.

Time triallists - good at maintaining a fast and steady pace.

To win overall you have to be a strong all rounder, pretty much sprinting is the only area in which you can be slack in.

When Eddie Merckx won his first tour he won every jersey and if they had of had it then he would also have won the white jersey for best young rider. Immense.
