FAO French speakers

We have a proper French bloke works at our place. I asked him to translate "Toi ta geule" for me, and he explained that it means "Be quiet/shut up/hush" but his English isn't quite good enough for nuances of meaning.

So I asked him what it means literally, and it all became very confusing: something about the mouth of an animal???.

Can anyone translate it literally (as I find the idioms of other languages very interesting)? And also confirm whether it's very rude or rather mild? He seemed to be trying to avoid being overheard, so I'm guessing it might be quite rude.

For non-Froggy speakers, it's pronounced 't**t a girl', which makes it doubly funny.
