Football is becoming, for all but a tiny number of clubs, very cyclical.
Where we are now is stale, devoid of any vision, leadership, even identity. I do NOT want us to go down, but, if we do, then things WILL change, through necessity, rather than have to change (but don't) if we stay up.
Hindsight yes, but I rather think that, where we find ourselves now is the end result of that win at Derby that took us up to the Premiership.
